Representative Madison Cawthorn from North Carolina’s 11th district is the youngest currently serving member of congress at 25 years old. While he has only assumed office this year on January first, he’s quickly become one of the top prospects in our hunt for the craziest politicians.
In 2017 Cawthorn posted a picture of himself at the Eagles Nest which was famously Adolf Hitlers vacation residence, Saying “It had been on his bucket list for a while.” First of all, he was 21 at the time, how do you already have a bucket list? AND why is it to visit Hitlers vacation spot? Besides being weird it’s also a clear endorsement of White Nationalism as Cawthorn was quoted as calling Hitler “Fuhrer". Cawthorn later deleted this post, but the internet never forgets.
Though his tenure has been rather short, it has still been long enough that Cawthorn has been inundated with allegations from both college and the campaign trail of sexual misconduct towards women. Katrina Krulikas described an incident when she was 17 and Cawthorn was 19 in which Cawthorn pressured her to sit on his lap and attempted to kiss her forcefully twice, which she resisted. Buzzfeed later reported that 20 people came forward to say that Cawthorn had harassed his female classmates. Reporters spoke to four victims, who said that Cawthorn would drive women in cars to remote areas of campus while asking them sexual questions. RA’s would warn women to avoid him and not get in his car. A glowing endorsement for a future congressman!
Cawthorn, after winning the election and before taking office, attended the Turning Point USA conference in Florida and stated that we would try to contest election results when Congress officially counted the electoral college. He called on the attendees of the conference to “lightly threaten” their representatives. To be clear, there is no such thing as a light threat, just threats. Those threats were answered on January 6th when Cawthorn addressed the very crowd that would later storm the Capitol and say, “This crowd has some fight”. But of course rather than take responsibility for anything, he blamed the violence on the “Democratic Machine” and continued to contest the 2020 elections results, until he rescinded those very views just TWO WEEKS LATER on January 23rd. This was of course in no way related to being investigated by the Office of Congressional Ethics on his role in the January 6th riots the day before. To use his own words, what a “spineless coward”.
